Ordering a personalised T-shirt can leave you with two questions: will it fit, and will the artwork look right on it? A familiar size label does not always guarantee the fit you expect, while the same print can look very different on a child’s shirt and an adult’s. This guide explains how to measure for a T shirt, compare size charts and judge design proportions before ordering.

How to Measure for a T-Shirt That Fits Properly

A well-fitting T-shirt from an existing wardrobe is the easiest place to start. Place the garment flat on a clean surface, align the seams naturally and leave the fabric unstretched. Gently smooth to remove larger wrinkles without changing the shape of the shirt or altering the measurements.

Use a flexible tape measure and record every measurement in the same unit.  Measure twice, particularly if the shirt sits between two chart sizes. Our product information notes that manual measurement and production can result in a variation of ±1 inch, or 2.54 cm. Treat the chart as a sizing guide rather than a promise that every garment will match each figure exactly. Compare your results with the chart on the Custom Chic product you want to order, rather than choosing only by its S, M or L label.

How to Measure the Length of a T-Shirt

T-shirt length is one of the key measurements when considering how to measure for a t-shirt. Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, right beside the collar, down to the bottom hem.

An easy way to choose the right length is to use a T-shirt that already fits you well as a reference. Measure its length and compare it with the size chart for the new style. This shows you a clearer idea of whether you prefer the new T-shirt to be shorter, longer or about the same length as your current one.

Body length also influences the visual relationship between the garment and its artwork. An oversized graphic may dominate a shorter T-shirt and leave the composition feeling crowded. On a longer silhouette, a very small motif may look disconnected from the surrounding space. Balanced proportions keep the artwork visually connected to the shape of the shirt.

How to Measure the Chest Width and Other Key Areas

The next step is checking the measurements that determine the fit most. Chest width, shoulder width and sleeve length each describe a different area of the shirt and should be measured separately.

Chest Width

When the T-shirt is laid flat, measure horizontally between the two underarm seams, from one side to the other. This is a flat garment measurement across one side of the shirt, not the full chest circumference. For example, a T-shirt with a 20-inch chest width does not have a 20-inch chest circumference. Measurement methods often vary between products, so the size chart is the most relevant reference.

Shoulder Width

Measure across the back between the points where the shoulder seams meet the sleeves. Keep the shirt flat and the tape straight.

This helps distinguish a narrower shoulder fit from a broader or dropped-shoulder cut. If your reference shirt has a noticeably different construction from the product you are buying, its shoulder measurement may be less useful than its chest width and length.

Sleeve Length

For a conventional short-sleeved T-shirt, measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve. Follow the measurement line shown in the product chart.

For long sleeves, measure along the sleeve to the cuff without stretching the fabric. Some garment charts use a different starting point, such as the centre back of the neck, so check the diagram first.

Basic tees, youth shirts, sweatshirts and all-over print styles can use different cuts and measurement points. Compare like-for-like wherever possible.

How to Use the Custom Chic T-Shirt Size Guide

Our  adult Basic Tee cover sizes from S to 5XL, while children's styles run from 3YR to 10YR. Fabric, garment cut and style can affect sizing, so the measurements attached to one T-shirt should not automatically be applied to another. Comparing those figures with a T-shirt you already wear comfortably is a more reliable way to judge the size than relying on body measurements alone.

If your measurements fall between two sizes, think about how you prefer the T-shirt to sit. The smaller option fits closer to the body, and the larger one leaves extra room through the chest and waist.

What T-Shirt Design Size Should You Choose?

There is no universal T shirt design size. The right dimensions depend on the print position, garment size, artwork shape and printing method. A small left-chest graphic needs far less room than a large front print or artwork spread across the back, so placement sets the scale from the start.

General printing references may use around 4 × 4 inches for a left-chest graphic, 12 × 16 inches for a large front design and 10 × 14 inches for back artwork. These figures show the general proportions, but they do not represent fixed Custom Chic print dimensions.

Each Custom Chic product page lists the personalisation area available for that specific design. The preview lets you assess how the artwork sits within those boundaries before you finalise it. This product-specific approach is more reliable than applying one t-shirt design size across every garment.

How Should a T-Shirt Design Be Positioned?

The front, back, left chest and sleeves of a T-shirt have different print areas, so it's important to choose a placement that keeps the design clear and balanced.

Front Print Placement

The front of a T-shirt suits many types of designs, from personal photos and family pictures to illustrations, logos and text. Larger artwork usually delivers a stronger visual statement across the chest, while a smaller design feels more understated and easy to wear every day. When resizing a photo or graphic, it's important to maintain its original proportions so faces, text and other details don't appear stretched or compressed.

Back Print Placement

Larger photos, detailed illustrations and longer quotes can be displayed across the back without making the layout look crowded. For a simpler design, a small logo or short line of text near the collar is another option. The final placement should leave enough space around the artwork to keep the overall design balanced.

Left-Chest Placement

For a smaller, more discreet print, the left-chest area is a common choice for initials, short names, logos and simple symbols. General printing guides often suggest a width of around 3 to 4 inches for this placement, although the actual print area depends on the garment and printing method. Custom Chic products may have different personalisation limits, so it's worth checking the individual product preview before finalising the design.

Sleeve Placement

Short names, initials, dates and small symbols can use the limited space available on a sleeve without competing with a larger front or back design. The artwork needs to stay compact enough to remain clear within the sleeve panel. Garment size, sleeve construction and printing method can change the available area, so the product preview should guide the final scale.

Should Design Size Change With T-Shirt Size?

Often, yes but scaling should preserve the intended appearance rather than follow a fixed rule.

Smaller shirts may need reduced artwork to leave space around the collar, sleeves and side seams. Larger shirts may suit a broader print, although a compact chest detail can intentionally remain small.

Youth and adult shirts should not automatically use identical print dimensions. A design that looks balanced on an adult XL may cover too much of a child’s shirt.

Keep the artwork’s aspect ratio when resizing: increase or reduce width and height proportionally. Stretching a photograph wider or taller changes faces and distorts lettering.

Also check readability after reducing the design. Small names and fine lines may need a simpler composition rather than further shrinking.

For Custom Chic orders, assess the product’s preview and stated print limits. Do not assume the artwork automatically increases in size with every garment size.

Common T-Shirt Measuring Mistakes

Printed T-shirts fade faster or develop damage when exposed to high temperatures, strong friction or unsuitable washing methods. Common mistakes include:

  • Washing the T-shirt at high temperatures or using an intensive wash cycle without checking the care instructions first.

  • Overloading the washing machine or washing the shirt with rough garments or items with zips that rub against the printed area.

  • Using bleach or harsh cleaning products when the care instructions advise against them.

  • Scrubbing, wringing or twisting directly over photos, text or illustrations, which puts unnecessary friction on the printed area.

  • Tumble drying the T-shirt at high heat when the care instructions advise against it.

  • Ironing directly over the printed design instead of following the recommended care instructions.

To keep the print in good condition, follow the care instructions on the T-shirt label or product page, especially for washing and drying temperatures. Store the shirt in a dry area when it is not in use and avoid unnecessary friction with rough surfaces.

Getting the right fit and print placement starts with knowing how to measure for a t-shirt accurately. From body length, chest width and sleeve measurements to choosing the right design size and positioning, every detail contributes to a well-balanced personalised T-shirt. At Custom Chic, you'll find personalised T-shirts with different styles, sizes and designs to suit your preferences. Compare the size guide, check the artwork placement and choose your favourite design with confidence.
